Overrated, homophobic (see: "Bunny Ain't No Kind of Rider", in which it is apparently acceptable for a straight white male to complain "you're just some faggy girl",) Of Montreal singer Kevin Barnes just wants everyone to know that he loves capitalism beacuse it punishes the "lazy" in a rant that not only displays a shocking misunderstanding of capitalism, anarchism, and global economics. A commenter over at Idolator points out that Barnes' rant is eerily reminiscent of the works of Ayn Rand, which is a pretty astute observation.

Somehow I am now a subscriber to Blender. Also: Perez Hilton and Punk Planet, the connection revealed
Even though I've never read Blender, much less paid for 12 monthly issues, I am now a subscriber. I'm a bit at a loss how this happened. A few possible scenarios:
1. A friend or family member thought this would make a great gift. The problem with that scenario is my friends and family members are perpetually broke
2. My wife decided there aren't enough photos of scantily clad 19 year old starlets around the house
3. Some intern came across my byline somewhere online and somehow mistook me for a person of tastemaking influence
4. Bender decided to trump Paste's pay-what-you-want deal and are now signing up random people for subscriptions
Please Explain
What the hell is Ollie North doing in Jay Z's new video? I am so confused:
Ted Leo wins Taco Bell contest, says "no thanks, I didn't apply"
This Taco Bell contest has been talked about before. Ted Leo + RX won it, apparently Leo didn't sign up, and has requested that the company take his name off it. I figured it was something like this when I heard, considering his outspoken anti-corporate stances and pro-veggie deal, so good on him for making a stink:

David Lee Roth: Master of the Pithy Phrase
I never realized the Yogi Berra-esque Zen wisdom of one David Lee Roth until one of his pearls of wisdom showed up in my Gmail "quote of the day" feed. Some words to live by:
A lot of rock bands are truly a legend in their own minds.
David Lee RothHe who knows how will always work for he who knows why.
David Lee RothI used to have a drug problem, now I make enough money.
David Lee RothI used to jog but the ice cubes kept falling out of my glass.
David Lee RothIt doesn't get better, it doesn't get worse, but it sure gets different!
David Lee RothMoney can't buy you happiness, but it can buy you a yacht big enough to pull up right alongside it.
Spam Filter
The spam filter has been freaking out over the past couple of hours, and has been flagging a number of regular commenters. Sorry for the annoyance, Sinker and I are figuring it out right now. Let me know via PM if you're still getting flagged.
How exactly did I miss this?
Dragon Wars? Monsters destroying buildings? In theaters now? How did I make it through this entire year without realizing this awesomeness was to come?
Corporate Sponsored Touring Comes to the Micro Indie Level
The altruistic folks at Taco Bell just want all "local" bands (meaning what precisely?) to know that they're totally down for the scene with their "Feed The Beat" promotion, offering free food to select touring bands.

Things I Love(d) About Punk Planet
1. That it kickstarted my re-engagement with two things I've always felt deeply about (journalism and politics) after a somewhat bleak, jaded and frustrated period during which I had turned away from those things.
2. That as a reader, I never felt patronized to, that the writers and editors would set a bar for thoroughness and thoughtfulness, and expect the reader to reach up for it.
3. That I could read it cover to cover, and it would take days.
4. That I always walked away having learned a great deal, and often about at least one topic I had never given much though to prior.
5. That it gave good reviews to three different CD's I released.
